NEW YEAR. NEW PLANS.

New year means new plans and ambitions for Team LifeProof’s Youri Zoon and Jonathan Paredes. Super pumped to squeeze in a catch up with these two before everything gets a little crazy. How does that desire to compete, train and win remain? Especially for Youri Zoon who will sadly have his last competitive year, after 15 years of competing. Jonathan came an impressive 3rd at the Red Bull World Championships in 2018 and is eager to get back on top and retain gold again in 2019. Let’s find out how they keep motivated and driven to be the leaders of the pack in their sports.

Up first Youri Zoon, an avid LifeProof FRĒ user who grew up in the South West of the Netherlands and has been a sports addict from a young age. BMX, Windsurfing, Motocross you name it, Youri has not just done it but pushed it to the absolute limit. At age 13, Youri decided to focus exclusively on kiteboarding.

Q. How has your 2019 been so far? What have you been up to?

A. So far it’s been quite chilled but yet very fun! November last year I injured my right knee, I have been training hard on that. Half way through January we decided to take a little holiday to Bonaire (also known as Divers Paradise) so I could get back in the water and relax as well. At the moment I’m in Australia, where I am fully back on the water again and getting ready for the new season.

Q. What do you have planned for the year ahead?

A. At the moment I have a reasonably fixed plan until July, after that it’s still all open! But usually it always fills up pretty quickly. I’ve got some interesting things coming up from some recent meetings, from snow kite trips to down-wind trips in the Maldives.

Q. What are you looking forward to in particular this year?

A. Sadly, this year will be about finishing up my competitive career. I’ve been competing for 15 years and this year I will ride my last competition. I will push myself to go out on a high and will also be more involved in the promotional and media side.

Q. Do you have any planned trips/holidays?

A. I’ve got loads of trips planned for the year ahead. To name a few: Morocco, Finland, Bonaire, Austria, Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, the Maldives and the Caribbean.

Q. Is there anything new you would like to experience this year?

A. I definitely want to see new locations and kite there! I have been to a lot of places throughout my career but I am looking forward to visiting new locations.

Q. What is your goal for 2019?

A. Mainly to have an amazing year and live it to the fullest.

Q. What advice would you give to your audience to encourage them to try something new and get active?

A. Don’t hesitate, if you have an idea just go for it. Fear is often the barrier, just seize the day!

Q. How do you motivate yourself to exercise even when you don’t want to? Any tips?

A. I don’t have much problems motivating myself, I really enjoy doing exercise and pushing myself. It always depends on the goal you want to achieve. It’s all about a good balance of healthy food and exercise.

Q. What does your diet look like, are you very strict?

A. Right now, I am reasonably strict since I am training a lot, but mostly I try to find a balance. With traveling it’s pretty hard but on the other side, I do a lot of sports so if I have a bad day of eating, I’ll make up for it the next day in the gym or kiting.

Q. What’s your favourite way to stay fit outside of your sport?

A. Going to the gym, biking, running, swimming, surfing – a bit of everything. I like it to mix it up, kiting is always different as well so it’s good to be very versatile.

Q. How has your 2019 been so far? What have you been up to?

A. Well, it’s been full of ups and downs, but I’m always happy for what I have and what I do. I have been training a lot of the time at the pool and enjoying quality family time.

Q. What do you have planned for the year ahead?

A. The nearest plan I have is travelling to Mexico City the end of February to visit my family and my sponsors. Then I’ll be traveling to Guadalajara in Mexico, to train there for a month before my first competition in the Philippines in April.

Q. What are you looking forward to in particular this year?

A. The main goal for this year is to be better and fully relaxed during my competitions at the World Series. My biggest goal this year is to perform my best at the World Championships in South Korea.

Q. Do you have any planned trips/holidays?

A. It will be a year full of competitions around the world again, which means no holidays at the moment but I’m sure I will arrange something later this year.

Q. What is your goal for 2019?

A. Be the champion again and be safe during the whole year.

Q. What advice would you give to your audience to encourage them to try something new and get active?

A. I truly believe that whatever you want to try or whatever you want to achieve has to be something you really love and have the motivation to do it.

A. I truly believe that whatever you want to try or whatever you want to achieve has to be something you really love and have the motivation to do it.

Q. How do you motivate yourself to exercise even when you don’t want to? Any tips for people?

A. It’s difficult and it happens, but when I get to the pool I remember all the things I have achieved in my sport over the years. It gives me the power and the motivation to keep moving and doing what I love the most. So, whenever you go to the gym, just remember why you are standing there and what do you want exactly for your health or your life.

Q. What does your diet look like, are you very strict?

A. Right now it has to be strict, I’m 29 years old and my body is not the same as when I was 18, unfortunately. At the moment I have to be very careful about what I’m eating, Especially because I work in speedos, Diet, diet and diet…there is nothing more important than eating healthy to support the exercise and training I have to do.

Q. Happy to be a LifeProof athlete for 2019?

A. I believe that LifeProof is not just about “DropProof, WaterProof”, I believe that LifepPoof goes farther than that. My regular day involves being on my phone, sending emails, phone calls with Red Bull, sharing videos, sharing photos, family calls - and LifeProof is a big part of that. It’s cool how people comment on my case on the subway, bus or anywhere I go. They are colourful and cool cases.
